Choosing The Right Shipping Container Size

We formed our business to help resolve storage problems construction companies face. This includes fast access to storage options such as shipping containers.

One question we receive quite often is in regards to size of shipping container, and how to determine which size is best suited for storage needs.

Typical shipping containers are 8-foot (2.44 m) wide by 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m) high, and either 20-foot (6.1 m) or 40-foot (12.19 m) long¹. However they can go as large as 45-foot.

So how do you choose a 20-foot shipping container or 40-foot? It really comes down to the cargo you’ll be storing and how much of it you have.

Too small a shipping container and you won’t solve your storage problems. Too large, and you’ll be taking up valuable space on your job site, not to mention paying for extra storage you’re not using.

A 20-foot shipping container can hold up to enough cargo that would fill up a one-car garage, whereas a 40-foot container will hold enough to fill a two-car garage. See our specifications chart which outlines size dimensions and net load here.

The 20-foot shipping containers are typically the most popular because they are the easiest to transport, while still providing sufficient storage space.
